Driveway Excavating, also known as "undercutting", is a construction term for removing unstable elements from the ground before a paving project is started. It goes along with Driveway Grading, but is usually done as a more extensive operation when problems arise with normal ground stabilization. Make sure you get a company that will not destroy your lawn.
Determining whether or not the land needs excavation can be done in a few different ways. There is geological testing that can be done, and also a test called a "proof roll." The proof roll test is executed by driving a heavy vehicle over the ground and observing any areas where ruts form, proving the ground is not yet stable. If significant rutting is present, then excavation to remove the unstable material should follow. |
